Marine Diesel Engine Maintenance and Troubleshooting: a 6 hour workshop (Extra fee)
In this engaging seminar, Nigel Calder explores marine diesel engine maintenance and troubleshooting procedures. Take a deeper look at fuel, oil, cooling, airflow, and powertrain systems.- extra fee
The diesel engine is a critically important piece of safety equipment aboard any cruising boat. Tech guru Nigel Calder, author of the best-selling Marine Diesel Engines (now in its third edition and used as a textbook in numerous diesel classes) brings his unique brand of humor to a seminar for boat owners, both power and sail, that want to get the most out of their time on the water. Distinguishing between contemporary and older diesel engines, Calder details often-overlooked critical installation issues, and takes a careful look at fuel, oil, cooling, airflow, and powertrain systems. He describes in detail all normal maintenance procedures together with basic troubleshooting techniques for common diesel engine problems. He defines what the untrained boat owner can reasonably be expected to do and what should not be attempted. You will come away from this seminar with an enhanced understanding of your engine and the confidence to carry out routine maintenance, which alone will save you the price of admission. No previous experience is required.

Boat Electrical Systems Design, Installation, and Troubleshooting: a 6 hour-workshop (Extra fee)
Nigel Calder details installation requirements and safety standards in electrical systems and shows troubleshooting techniques for common electrical problems.

Electrical systems are now the number one cause of problems on boats that have anything more than rudimentary electronics. Most problems can be traced to inadequate design and/or poor installation. Tech guru Nigel Calder, author of the best-selling Boatowner’s Mechanical and Electrical Manual (now in its fourth edition) will begin with a description of key design criteria that must be met if a DC system is to meet the needs of the boat owner. In the process, he will reference some of the newer technologies that are likely to transform the performance of electrical systems in the coming years. Then he will delve into basic installation requirements that comply with boatbuilding and safety standards, but which unfortunately are often not met; Calder has numerous examples from brand-new boats! This includes the important and often neglected provision of adequate over-current protection. We will round out the day by looking at simple multimeter troubleshooting techniques that can be safely conducted by any boat owner. This seminar is designed for the inexperienced and requires no prior knowledge, although it will be challenging for some. It will help you understand your own electrical systems and to nip many common problems in the bud. Attendees will come away with an understanding of core design and installation requirements and the ability to perform simple troubleshooting techniques that will enable the majority of electrical problems to be rapidly identified. The overarching goal is to raise the confidence levels of boat owners with today’s increasingly electrically-loaded and complicated boats.

12 Multihulls Worth Building for the PNW
In a world needing low-carbon boating solutions for our gorgeous PNW cruising grounds, multihulls emerge as strong candidates . Peter will review 10 designs from 18 to 44 feet, both power and sail that are inspired by or relate well to our long but cool season. Models, photos,  and plans will convey the essence of these boats, designed for compounded plywood/epoxy, still the lightest and quickest to build per dollar. Emphasis will be on meshing with marinas using folding or telescoping systems to reduce charges and increase acceptance. Further utility comes from fitting on a trailer or into containers for worldwide shipping.  You have to dig deep to do all that,  go twice wind speed, cover longer distances quickly, and still enjoy sensible cruising amenities. Peter will deliver on that in this one- hour talk.

Later, I volunteered extensively in the Boat Shop at the Dolphin Club in San Francisco, working on maintenance, restoration and construction of various lapstrake boats, many which were Whitehalls. The sliding rowing seats of those boats in the Club are sculpted ergonomic minimalist forms, much like the 18th and early 19th c. Try Corking a Boat
Caulking, or Corking in some parts of the world; is a very important part of making the wooden boat waterproof.
You can try your hand at it in the boat shop on our corking board throughout the festival.

Traditional caulking (also spelled calking) on wooden vessels uses fibers of cotton and oakum (hemp fiber soaked in pine tar). These fibers are driven into the wedge-shaped seam between planks, with a caulking mallet and a broad chisel-like tool called a caulking iron.
The caulking is then covered over with a putty, in the case of hull seams, or else in deck seams with melted pine pitch, in a process referred to as paying.

We sponsor bravery.

The lack of diverse representation in outdoor sports is crushing and we hope to be of some service not only for fun but to challenge, grow and recover. There is an irrefutable link between Us and our Surroundings.. SEASTR is promoting opportunities for people to engage with each other and their community through inclusionary maritime porgrams both recreational and commercial. We are creating a safe platform that opens dialogue and pathways and creates conversation at local speaking engagements. By offering experiences that may put us outside our comfort zone we may promote growth whether it be racing, adventuring or watersport camps/clinics.

Our environment is an interface for healing, growth, bravery, and local activism. We are here to optimize the human/environment connection, using water to engage humans in their own process of healing and evolution, making a difference for themselves, their families, and their communities. Being able to participate in the seventy48, the Salish100 and R2AK generates public awareness of how far we are willing to go and the possibilities within all of us.

In this demonstration I will show folks how to mortise with a plunge router. Many woodworkers start with a small budget and cannot afford a dedicated mortiser or a Domino. If one's interest is in traditional joinery, a plunge router can provide a maker with a quick, accurate, clean mortise which suits the logic of a haunched tenon in a grooved raised panel door frame, for example. Mortising and chisel cleanup will be demonstrated.

Building Camas Moon
A wooden boat can be viewed not so much as an object as a snapshot in time of a work in progress. This presentation will cover the beginnings and the first post-launch year of that work for one new boat. The process of building a new boat doesn’t start with a stack of materials in the shop nor is it finished when the boat is launched. With my boat Camas Moon, a new Copgy18 mini-motorsailer yawl design by Tad Roberts, it started with the realization that I could no longer do what I wanted to do with the boat I had, together with the forced isolation of the pandemic. I will tell the story of how I decided to build a new boat, searched for the right design and was given an opportunity to build an almost-custom boat. It continues with a documentation of the dialogue, as the build progressed, between me and Tad Roberts, the designer. I will show the main milestones of the build and some of the construction details that I decided on, based on my experience, thoughts and preferences. I’ll talk about the launch, the shake-down cruise to this festival in 2022, and the list of fixes and improvements that resulted from the actual use of the boat on the water. I’ll end by describing the current state of the boat, incorporating the upgrades that I made over the winter.

Small Boats to Send Kids Across Big Waters
"Let's face it: there's nothing quite like spending time around the water, especially in small boats. Unfortunately, many kids don't have opportunities to develop a passion for boating and the ocean. That's why at Angus Rowboats, we're working on an exciting new project to help ignite youthful passion for these pursuits.

We're creating 4-foot uncrewed downwind sailboats that can cross oceans. Through these boats, students embark on an exciting voyage that teaches them about geography, ocean currents, and cultural connections. They pack a compartment with gifts and souvenirs to be collected by school kids in a random distant location, creating a modern message in a bottle. The boats are tracked via satellite, allowing students to follow their progress across the ocean. Our project empowers young minds and prepares them for a future that is increasingly reliant on technology and global connections. Colin will discuss the motivation behind this project, the technology involved, and how we hope it will instill a sense of stewardship and passion for the oceans in kids who may not otherwise have access to the water."

The World's Longest Paddle Race: An Average Dad Takes on the Yukon
The Yukon 1000 is the world's longest paddle race. Stretching 1000 miles from Whitehorse to the Dalton Highway Bridge, the Yukon is a truly untamed and largely unsettled expanse of river where a mistake can be catastrophic. The 2022 race received over 3500 applications for 40 spots, of which only 24 teams began the race and 21 finished. I will give an overview of the race and the experience itself, describing the various adventures and misadventures along the way with the intent to instill an understanding of what it is like to experience the race. I will also repeatedly share how big the mosquitos were. Seriously. Backing up from the event itself, I will walk you through the logistics and planning. The intent of my presentation is to cover an adventure and to inspire others who may wish to tackle the Yukon by making the race digestible. I rarely get in a boat, I have two toddlers and a full time job that keep me busy, and I could probably lose a few pounds. I hope these factors help inspire you to believe that you too can tackle the Yukon.

Take me to the Water: Histories of the Black Pacific Project
Take Me to the Water: Histories of the Black Pacific reveals the deep and historic connection between people of African descent and the Pacific Ocean. Most accounts of the United States’ maritime enterprises are disproportionately populated by white seafarers. Yet, from the 16th to the 20th century, Black whalers, commercial mariners, fishers, explorers, soldiers, and sailors traveled along the Pacific Coast and traversed the high seas. The stories of these mariners, their impact in shaping the American Pacific, and their legacy in the context of development of society and identity, are all explored in Take Me to the Water: Histories of the Black Pacific. In this presentation, the project's curator and director, Dr. Caroline Collins describes the inspiration for this developing project as well as the opportunities and challenges in planning its three formats which include a gallery & traveling exhibit, a small vessel build, and a short documentary film.

Building Adventuress' Hollow Spruce Topmast Rig
Last winter we capped off a decade of extensive work on SV Adventuress by building new topmasts.  Our presentation will speak to their design, procurement of materials, and construction, which in conjunction with the fiber rig designed and built by Ian's rigging gang allow Adventuress to fly topsails for the first time in many years.

Sailing into our 70s
For those who love international sailing, deep travel, and who dream to do so into their 70s, finding crew, boats, and learning to adjust the physical work and mental expectations as we age is key. Ocean sailor Kaci Cronkhite (US) met Silvija and Egon Brandell (Sweden), owners and co-builders of the 44' ketch MAGNUM BONUM while sailing around the world in the 1990s. Thirty years later, (with Egon sadly passed) Silvija continues to sail their boat-as captain. In 2019, Kaci joined her for a month as First Mate sailing from Stockholm to Aalborg, Denmark. Silvija went on to sail to Iceland via Orkneys, Shetland, Faroe and back to Stockholm with other friends and family as crew. In summer 2022, Kaci (61) joined Silvija (now 76) and Janis (a 31 yo Latvian man) for a voyage from Stockholm to Denmark, transiting the Kiel (Germany) and Frisian (North Holland) canals to Enkhuizen, Netherlands. This talk focuses on that rare and magical 7-week experience—an international, intergenerational voyage of hearts, minds, and cultures onboard, as well as in every port.

Seeking Synchronicity: A Solo Kayak Journey Up the Inside Passage
Put any human in a tiny vessel and send them up a perilous 1,200-mile stretch of the Inside Passage of British Columbia and SE Alaska—and they are bound to have stories! Susan Conrad’s stories are not just filled with intrigue and adventure, but they have heart, inspiration, and gratitude. Susan will share stories and images of her 2022 solo, 78-day sea kayak expedition up the Inside Passage from San Juan Island to Sitka, Alaska, comparing and contrasting it with her 2010 expedition.

Relive the trip with Susan as she shares experiences of paddling marathon distances for days on end, struggling to interact with the sea on its terms, forging friendships with quirky people in remote locations, pretending not to be intimidated by 700-pound grizzly bears and 40-ton whales, and living her dream. Highlights will include her efforts to raise awareness of British Columbia’s proposed Marine Protected Areas in the Great Bear Rainforest, and retracing the paddle strokes of the late, great Audrey Sutherland, the grand dame of expedition paddling.

The State of the Sound
Puget Sound is the largest estuary in the United States (by volume of water), and plays a vital role in our region’s ecology, economy, and quality of life. And as any sailor knows, Puget Sound is a beautiful place to live and recreate. Beneath the surface, though, Puget Sound is in trouble. Fortunately, we have a plan to help-- and boaters have an important role to play!

We'll begin by describing the status of Puget Sound as a waterbody, while answering questions like:
-How's Puget Sound doing (and how can we tell)?
-What are the key challenges in recovering Puget Sound back to health?
-What gives us hope?
Then, we'll talk about the region's official plan to recover Puget Sound-- and more specifically, the actions that boaters can take to help!

Woman, Captain, Rebel: The Extraordinary True Story of a Daring Icelandic Sea Captain
Margaret Willson talks about her new book, the story of a remarkable 19th century Icelandic woman who became the most acclaimed fishing caption of her time, who, through many adventures, fished unforgiving Arctic waters for fifty years in small open oared boats—and never lost a single crewmember. On land and sea, she stood independent in the face of oppression and inequality. Known for her intelligence and perception, she was blackmailed by the authorities into helping them solve one of Iceland’s most notorious crimes of that century—which she promptly did. Her life, until now almost completely erased, subverts our notions of the lives of historical women, on both land and sea

"Shanghaied" A New Historical Fiction
As a lifelong sailor, my first novel is (of course) a sea-story. SHANGHAIED, set on a tall ship in 1810, tells the story of a man stolen from his New England life who is determined to return home. His is an adventure/hero's journey that might be meaningful to any one who has ever felt "at sea." By investing in this tale and these characters the perspectives and metaphors sailing offers, I hope that new and non-sailors will feel they are "out there" on the high seas and that experienced sailors will resonate with what they read.

A Most Beautiful Thing
The moving true story of a group of young men growing up on Chicago's West side who form the first all-Black high school rowing team in the nation, and in doing so not only transform a sport, but their lives.

Join us on Saturday night at Festival for a special cinematic experience, as we present the feature-length documentary, “A Most Beautiful Thing!” Arshay Cooper—the movie’s inspiring protagonist—will be on-site to hold a question-and-answer session after the screening. Here’s how the film team sets the stage:
The film chronicles the first African American high school rowing team in this country (made up of young men, many of whom were in rival gangs from the West Side of Chicago), all coming together to row in the same boat. This amazing story is based on the memoir by Arshay Cooper.

“A Most Beautiful Thing” explores not only the safety these young men found on the water (where, as the captain reflected, “we were in a place where we could not hear the sound of sirens”), but the trauma of violence and cyclical poverty, examining how these young men were able to support each other in reimagining a different future for themselves, and how rowing and the water provided the backdrop for that opportunity.

Named one of the best films of 2020 by Esquire, “A Most Beautiful Thing” is narrated by the Academy Award/Grammy-winning artist, Common; executive produced by NBA Stars Grant Hill and Dwyane Wade along with Grammy Award-winning producer 9th Wonder [who also did the hip-hop score]; and [is] directed by award-winning filmmaker and Olympic rower Mary Mazzio.

The movie will be shown at 6 PM on Saturday, September 9, at Wooden Boat Festival, with the Q&A session to follow. Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to watch the film and engage with Arshay Cooper firsthand!

Mapping the World: Making Travel Safe for Us
Mapping the World.  Starting over 500 years ago European explorers discovered new lands, but they didn't take the time and considerable effort to accurately pinpoint where the new lands were.  James Cook was the transition figure; he was a master explorer and he was a meticulous cartographer.  We’ll start with his legacy and then include a few famous 19th century cartographers who made travel and trade safe for the rest of us even today.  We'll end how modern day cartographers continue the process--same process, just better tools.

Her life, until now almost completely erased, subverts our notions of the lives of historical women, on both land and sea.

Building Community Training for the SEVENTY48: Is the Adventure the Race?
Is the adventure the race? Or is it the journey to the race that is the real adventure? The time spent on the water training and building our confidence to race by facing our fears amounts to 100's of miles AND hours while the race itself is only 70 miles with a max of 48 hours to complete it.  This is why most of the adventure actually happens before the adventure itself!

This talk is about how three women of differing abilities and goals signed up for the 70/48 for a third time despite “failures” (and successes) in previous attempts. It's about how we used what we learned from previous adventures, built community to help us train for the race in 2023, and the exciting experiences we had while doing so. We'll have more to tell about this years race itself of course after the race!

My goal for this talk is to inspire anyone, wherever they are on their journey. Be they curious about adventure and wondering if they have what it takes or be they seasoned adventurers that are interested in hearing others stories about how they put the pieces in place to get themselves to the start line.

Salt on the Wind: The Sailing Life of Allen and Sharie Farrell
Author of the official biography of Allen and Sharie Farrell, Dan Rubin has collected and recorded the details of their life on the water.  With storytelling, readings from the Farrell's journals and boat logs along with live music, Dan will weave the wonderful story of a couple who lived the sailing dream, building 46 wooden boats by hand on the beaches of British Columbia and sailing offshore in the largest of these to California, Mexico, Hawaii and Fiji,  Details of the boats, voyages and how the Farrells lived are among the appealing details of a life that avoided consumerism, violence and the demands of civilization, by creating a life made with the work of their own hands. Join us for this inspiring story!

Wood Boats on the Big Muddy
On June 16th I am rowing my handcrafted wood Grand Canyon dory from St. Joseph, MO to St. Louis, MO as an "homage" to the mountain men, pioneers, miners and travelers of the Oregon Trail who used the Missouri River as a highway in the 1800's. It should take me a week to row 400 miles across the state and I will be doing a lot of filming and photographing along the way...... rustic "canvas and wool" camping - open fire cooking with elegant camp meals etc......  I will be writing an article about this trip for WoodenBoat Magazine and will create a presentation about the trip for the Wooden Boat Festival.  Then in August, I will head to Montana to do an 80 mile Missouri River trip from Fort Benton through the Badlands of Montana and the White Cliffs - camping and capturing stunning photographs of a very "different" looking "upper" Missouri River. This trip will also be part of the article for Wooden Boat and the presentation.
