There is an increasing interest in powering boats with electricity but the technology of electric power is quite different from that of gas or diesel. This presentation will provide an introduction to electric power and include:
1. The basic physics of electricity - what is a volt, amp, amp-hr, watt, watt-hr, horsepower, difference between power and energy
2. How much power do you really need for a displacement hull? Why electric power is different from gas/diesel power
3. Estimating how much energy you need to travel a specific distance
4. Battery technology, energy stored, and weight and how this affects the distance traveled
5. Different types of electric motors readily available
6. Solar power
